Scholarship in honor of Marion Carl King
Marion Carl King (King) that’s what they called him was a man of integrity, honesty, and strong values. Having the opportunity to share a man with the DC community was a life experience. He was a man that love the youth and truly inspired you to be the best that you could be in life. His vision was for every child to become educated, full of life skills and to become a productive citizen. Excuses were not accepted in our household.
Being the father of two daughters he stressed the importance of completing your education. For you that may not know. I left college at my junior year for personal reasons. Four years ago I shared with my family the reason why I decided to leave Virginia State University. The Spring of 1987 my father set down with my sister and I down to discuss the financial challenges of educating three children. Remember he did not ask me or my sister to leave school. When I look into my father eyes I saw the heart ache and pain of saying where is the money coming from to continue my children’s education.
At that moment I made a decision to complete that semester so that my sister could return and complete her degree. My dad always stressed to me that he wanted me to go back and take care of unfinished
business. After being away from academia for sixteen years I decided to return
and complete the task. December 9, 2009 I have the opportunity to share my moments of graduating with one of two a degrees in Real Estate with honors of High Distinction and a 4.0 GPA. My family and I went home that afternoon to share the news with the family back home and I was told that Dad is gone. My
heart was broken but is stilling healing from a father, mentor and one of the most important vessel that groom me into the woman that I am today.
Dad would have been truly proud of his children and grandchildren that are also in college majoring in Physical Therapy, Business Management and Accounting with the concentration of Finance. Again, Dad we truly miss you and there is not a day that goes by without me sharing with my students of the wonderful father I had the opportunity to share.
Finally, DC Public Schools meant everything to him. Being an alumnus of HD Woodson Sr. High
is an honor. Go Warriors reach for sky it is obtainable.
